Composer's Statement

I incorporated the appropriate content into my genre composition by making sure I talked about myself and the experiences that I went through this summer as I began my first semester of college. I also incorporated links from the CARE website which is a program I am currently involved in and links from websites which explain how to write a personal narrative being that I did not have much experience or confidence in writing a personal narrative. I included my own personal experiences this summer and my own personal thoughts because it is my personal narrative meaning it is a narrative about me and my thoughts and experiences only. For my genre composition the intended audience was my instructor and classmates being that my instructor would be the one to read and grade my genre composition, and I would have to present my E- portfolio to my classmates, meaning that they would see the work that I have completed. Another audience I considered was incoming college freshmen next year who are entering through CARE or regular admissions because they may be nervous and not know what to expect for their first semester of college. Being a first generation college student, I did not know anything about what to expect from college and it made me extremely worried and nervous. I had no one to talk to or anyone to help guide me in the way I needed to go to begin my first semester in college. My hope for this personal narrative was to help ease some of the nervousness other first generation college students and hope they would understand it is not as hard as it may seem and that it is normal and okay to be nervous but they can get through it and there are resources on campus to help them get through it so they do not feel alone. My purpose for communicating with the audience is to help explain my experience and ease some nervousness people may have who are going to be heading into their first year of college, and to give some insight to my instructor about what goes through the mind of a freshman in college. I did not intend to use any pathos, ethos, or logos but it seems to me that I have used logos because I wanted to make sure that my audience understood what I was saying in my personal narrative and understood the experience I had in my first semester of college. I may have also used pathos because I did explain the fear and worry I had before beginning which could make the audience feel sympathy for me being that I had no one behind me to understand my struggles that I would have had to face in my first semester. The audience would be able to place themselves in the shoes of a scared college freshman with no guidance and be able to relate to my personal narrative more. Being that I included first person words such as “my” and “I” the audience would be able to identify that they are reading a personal narrative. I also explained my personal feelings and told my story in a first person point of view so that the audience would be able to place themselves in the personal narrative and feel what I felt. My goal was for my audience to be able to easily identify that my genre composition was a personal narrative and using my personal research on how to write a personal narrative has made me confident that I have achieved this goal and the audience is satisfied.
